সিলেটের ‘সুন্দরবন’ খ্যাত বাংলাদেশের একমাত্র জলাবন (সোয়াম্প ফরেস্ট) হচ্ছে রাতারগুল। সারা পৃথিবীতে ফ্রেশওয়াটার সোয়াম্প ফরেস্ট বা স্বাদুপানির জলাবন আছে মাত্র ২২টি। ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশ আছে এর দুইটি। তার একটি শ্রীলংকায় আর আরেকটি আমাদের বাংলাদেশের সিলেটের গোয়াইনঘাটে। স্থানীয় মানুষ জনের কাছে এইটা “সুন্দরবন” নামেই বেশি পরিচিত, আবার অনেকেই বলে “বাংলাদেশের আমাজান”।
ছুটিতে কিংবা অখণ্ড অবসরে ঘুরে আসতে পারেন দেশের রাতারগুল থেকে। অবসর সময় কাটাতে প্রতিদিন এখানে ছুটে আসে ভ্রমণ পিপাসুরা। এটি জলাবন হিসেবে পরিচিত হলেও শীতে পর্যাপ্ত পানি থাকে না এ বনে। সিলেট জেলার গোয়াইনঘাট উপজেলায় প্রায় ৩৩৮ একর জায়গাজুড়ে অবস্থিত এই বনকে ১৯৫২ সালে সংরক্ষিত বন হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে বন বিভাগ। শীতে এ বনের পানি শুকিয়ে গেলেও বছরের বাকি সময় জলমগ্ন থাকে পুরো বনটি।
গোয়াইন নদীর নিকটে চেঙ্গির খালের সাথে সংযুক্ত একটি মিঠাপানির জলাভুমির বন হল রাতারগুল। এই বনটি সারাবছর প্রায় ১০ ফুট পানির নীচে থাকে এবং বর্ষাকালে চিরসবুজ এই বনটি ২০ ফুট থেকে ৩০ ফুট পানির নীচে প্লাবিত হয়। এই বনে করচ গাছ (পঙ্গামিয়া পিন্নাটা) বেশী জন্মায়।
রাতারগুল মূলত বন্যপ্রাণীর অভয়ারণ্য। এ বনের প্রাণীদের বড় একটি অংশ সরীসৃপ। বিভিন্ন প্রকারের দেশী মাছ ছাড়াও এই বনে রয়েছে বানর, পাখি, টিকটিকি, পোকামাকড় সহ নানা প্রজাতির প্রাণী। এখানে বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির সাপ দেখা যায়। সোনা রঙের ব্যাঙ রাতারগুলের অন্যতম আকর্ষণ। এছাড়াও রাতারগুলে রয়েছে নানা প্রজাতির ব্যাঙ। গিরগিটির দেখা পাওয়া যাবে রাতারগুলের জলাবনে। এখানে আপনি শকুন এবং ঈগলেরও দেখা পেতে পারেন।
কিভাবে যাবেনঃ
দেশের যেকোনো প্রান্ত থেকে প্রথমে সিলেট শহর আসতে হবে। তারপর সিলেট থেকে রাতারগুল। সিলেট শহর থেকে রাতারগুলের দূরত্ব প্রায় ১৯ কি.মি। যেতে সময় লাগবে ১ ঘন্টা।

রাতারগুল বা তার আশপাশে খাবারের হোটেল বা থাকার কোনো ভালো ব্যবস্থা নেই। তাই খাবার গোয়াইনঘাট বা সিলেট থেকে নিয়ে যেতে পারেন।
আরেকটা বিষয়, নৌকায় করে বেড়ানোর সময় পানিতে হাত না দেয়াই ভালো। জোঁকসহ বিভিন্ন পোকামাকড় তো আছেই, বর্ষায় বিষাক্ত সাপও পানিতে বা গাছে দেখতে পাওয়া যায় । সাঁতার না জানলে সঙ্গে লাইফ জ্যাকেট রাখা জরুরি। এ ছাড়া ছাতা, বর্ষাতি কিংবা রোদ টুপিও সঙ্গে নিতে হবে। এখানে বেড়ানোর নৌকাগুলো অনেক ছোট। এক নৌকায় পাঁচজনের বেশি উঠবেন না।
